    COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa are proud to offer the inaugural Thoracic Rare Cancers Symposium (THORACS), to take place at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa on Friday, October 3, 2025. This one day Symposium, preceded by a dinner and opening plenary presentation on the Thursday evening, has been designed to provide thoracic cancer specialists a unique opportunity to come together and discuss the current state of diagnosis and management of rare thoracic cancers. With the advance of molecular diagnostics, an increasing number of rare lung cancers are being identified (e.g. Her2, SMARCA4, NTRK, NRG1, EGFR exon20 etc) in addition to the more widely studied variants (e.g. EGFR, ALK, Ret etc).

Through lectures, case-based discussions and workshops, participants will be able to understand novel diagnostic and therapeutic options for these rare cancers. Put together by an outstanding organizing committee including leading experts from across Canada and the USA, this symposium promises to be an annual 'must do' event in the educational calendar for thoracic cancers.

    OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this symposium, participants should be able to:
    • Describe the state of the field in treatments for rare subtypes of lung cancer characterized by driver mutations or fusions and understand the oncogenic mechanism of these rare changes.
    • Identify future targets and treatments currently in development.
    • Discuss the role of liquid biopsy and NGS testing in the treatment of molecular subtypes of lung cancer.
    • Discuss the challenges and possible solutions for research into rare subtypes of lung cancer.
